Kurunegala – The Royal City of Rocks and Heritage

Kurunegala is a historic city located in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. Once the capital of the island during the 13th century, this city is now a vibrant mix of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and modern development. Surrounded by massive rocky outcrops and lush greenery, Kurunegala is often referred to as the City of Elephants, a nod to its ancient name Athugalpura.

Kurunegala lies at the base of a series of rock formations, the most iconic being Elephant Rock (Ethagala), which overlooks the city and resembles a resting elephant. 1. Ethagala (Elephant Rock)

Kurunegala served as the capital of Sri Lanka for several kings during the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Several ruins and historical sites in and around the city reflect its royal past, including the ancient Raja Maha Viharaya and other hidden archaeological remains.

3. Ridi Viharaya (Silver Temple)
Located a short drive from the city, this ancient cave temple is believed to have been built in the 2nd century BC. It holds religious significance and features beautiful frescoes, sculptures, and a sacred Bodhi tree. It is also associated with the supply of silver to construct Ruwanwelisaya in Anuradhapura.

4. Kurunegala Lake (Kurunegala Wewa)
A scenic man-made reservoir located in the heart of the city, Kurunegala Lake is perfect for a peaceful stroll or picnic. The surrounding pathway is popular among joggers and families, offering a cool breeze and relaxing environment.
